ETS would like to introduce you to JESS IBROM (previous Technical Director for the Cook Islands and Coach Instructor to deliver Oceania and FIFA coaching courses). Jess will be starting a new journey in football very soon, and we are very excited for him and wish him all the best.
This week on THE COACHES' CORNER, Coach Jess shares some insight into his coaching journey so far.
Q: CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF INTRO ABOUT YOURSELF—PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE?
A: I’m Wesley Sergel, currently Assistant Coach at Stellenbosch FC in the South African National First Division (NFD). My background is in Performance Analysis and Sport Science. I worked with the South African U20 Men’s Team and was part of their 2017 Africa U20 Cup of Nations and the 2017 U20 FIFA World Cup. I’m currently completing my UEFA B coaching license.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DID YOU DEVELOP IT?
A: My philosophy emphasizes solid core values, work ethic, and accountability. I implement an aggressive pressing style and focus on transition moments, creating space for attacking players. I believe in a high-tempo, front-foot approach to play.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL SKILL FOR A PLAYER/COACH TO MASTER?
A: Technique is the foundation. The ability to make the right decision under pressure separates top-level players. Continuous tactical repetition helps players learn and improve.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW COACHES STARTING THEIR COACHING JOURNEY?
A: Education is key. Attend coaching courses, read, and learn from the world’s leading coaches. Nothing beats time spent on the field coaching, learning from mistakes, and building your own philosophy.

Q: HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE DIFFERENT ABILITIES OF PLAYERS WITHIN YOUR SQUADS?
A: We need creative solutions to cater to different abilities. Training sessions should be structured to provide players with opportunities to grow and adapt based on their strengths.
