ETS would like to introduce you to SHAWN BISHOP (Head of youth at MAMELODI SUNDOWNS). Shawn has many years experience in the South African Coaching industry, has travelled to participate in the World Cup and has taken some time to chat to us.
This week in the Coaches Corner, Coach Shawn shares some insights and his coaching journey so far.
Q: CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF INTRO ABOUT YOURSELF - PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE?
A: I’m currently the Reserve Team coach at Mamelodi Sundowns and Assistant Coach of the National U17 Team. I started as a U11 Satellite coach in 2011 after transitioning from playing at the amateur level. Over the years, I’ve progressed through various roles, including Head of the Academy and Head of Scouting. I decided to focus on improving myself as a coach and obtained my UEFA qualifications.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY AND HOW DID YOU CREATE YOUR PHILOSOPHY?
A: My philosophy is ever-evolving, as I stay up-to-date with modern trends and styles of play. I believe adaptability is key to getting the best out of players and teams.
Q: IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL SKILL FOR A PLAYER/COACH TO MASTER?
A: Technical ability is fundamental for players, but equally important is a passion for the game. For coaches, being open-minded and embracing change is essential for continuous growth.
Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW COACHES STARTING THEIR COACHING JOURNEY?
A: Keep learning, apply yourself, and make yourself available to help others. Attend as many games and coaching courses as you can, and learn from everyone.
Q: HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE DIFFERENT ABILITIES OF PLAYERS WITHIN YOUR SQUADS?
A: At an elite level, it’s crucial to keep players engaged and challenged. For younger age groups, I adjust the games or add extra challenges to keep everyone involved and progressing.
